The Whitney offers complimentary admission to members, visitors 18 and under, and the following groups with valid identification. Timed tickets must be reserved in advance.

Standard tours last one hour and cover one exhibition. We also offer a Welcome to the Whitney tour, which explores the Whitney's history, architecture, and some highlights from our Permanent Collection.

Permits for Mt Whitney Day Use and Mt Whitney Trail Overnight are by reservation only. Visitor center is not open for walk up requests as we are working remotely.

Following a move in 1954 to an expanded site on West 54th Street, the Whitney opened the Marcel Breuer-designed building on Madison Avenue at 75th Street in 1963. The iconic building housed the Museum from 1966 through October 20, 2014. The Whitney's current building at 99 Gansevoort Street opened on May 1, 2015.

Personal, noncommercial photography is permitted in public areas and in the Museum's Permanent Collection galleries only. The use of a flash, tripod, or other professional equipment is not permitted.

Generally 70,000 to 100,000 hikers apply to hike or backpack to the summit from Whitney Portal between May and November. So the parks service enforces a quota system. Only 100 day-hikers and 60 backpackers are allowed on the Mt Whitney Trail from Whitney Portal per day, from May 1st to November 1st.

Pets are not allowed in the gallery except for service animals. The use of charcoal, pastels, permanent markers and watercolor or oil paint is not allowed in the galleries. Please deposit any items larger than 11 x 15 x 5 inches in the coat check during your visit.

The museum closed in October 2014 to relocate to its current building, which was designed by Renzo Piano at 99 Gansevoort Street and opened on May 1, 2015. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the museum's namesake and founder, was a well-regarded sculptor and serious art collector.
